Only Nick Saban can pull off what happened last year during Bama’s game with Arkansas.

A player was used as a referee in the 4th quarter of the Alabama- Arkansas game last October

Tuscaloosa, AL (FP) We’re not quite sure how this went virtually un-noticed by media outlets but Alabama used a player as a referee during the 2018 season when four of the seven game officials were injured and unable to continue the 4th quarter. It took place October 6 when Alabama beat Arkansas 65-31 in Fayettville.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban and Arkansas Head Coach Chad Morris agreed to allow Alabama Sophomore Receiver DeVonta Smith to perform the duties of Back Judge for the last 8:22 of the fourth quarter as part of the game officiating crew.

This photo shows DeVonta Smith signaling a touchdown late in the 4th quarter after an Arkansas touchdown run by  quarterback Cole Kelley.
