Jackson, MS- The Mississippi Melanoma has been ordered to change the name of their team by League Commissioner Travis Tritter late Thursday. The Melanoma play in the Gulf Region Flag Football League that includes 48 teams all located in the Southeast.
Player-Coach and Quarterback of the Melanoma, Thomas Tutone said ” a team name should be intimidating and scary and what’s more intimidating than cancer? “We plan to fight this order as it’s unconstitutional and just wrong, most of us on this team are tax paying Americans” added Tutone. A league spokesman says it will not allow the team to even take the field unless they change their name. The league plans to stop the game from happening with an armed security force to prevent The Melanoma from entering the stadium. The Mississippi Melanoma’s first game is tentatively scheduled for July 22 against the Vicksburg Vomit.
